NUDT achieves historic breakthrough in 2025 MCM/ICM

2025/05/19

The results of the 41st Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)/Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) were recently announced, with NUDT students securing a historic milestone by winning two Outstanding Winner awards in a single year for the first time.

The team of Shi Zhengwei, Liu Puyuan and Xue Jihang from the College of Systems Engineering and the College of Electronic Engineering, with faculty advisor Wang Zelong from the College of Science, was designated as Outstanding Winner, COMAP Scholarship Award and SIAM Award. The team of Peng Cheng, Wu Hansen and Luo Zeyu from the Basic Education College and the College of Science, with faculty advisor Lu Jun from the College of Science, was designated as Outstanding Winner and ASA Award, marking NUDT’s first-ever ASA Award. Additionally, NUDT students secured eight Finalist awards and 21 Meritorious Winner prizes, ranking among the global top performers.

Established in 1985 under the auspices of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the American Statistical Association (ASA), and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), MCM is one of the world’s most prestigious mathematical modeling competitions. The 2025 edition attracted 27,456 teams from 21 countries and regions, including elite institutions such as Caltech, UCLA, Duke University, Cornell University, Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Zhejiang University. Only 43 teams (0.15%) received Outstanding Winner, 493 Finalist awards (1.8%) and 1767 Meritorious Winners (6.43%).

NUDT has prioritized mathematical modeling innovation and established Mathematical Modeling Innovation Practice Base and the NUDT Math Modeling student club through the College of Science. Meanwhile, the College of Science has built a seasoned instructor team dedicated to year-round mathematical modeling training and hands-on competition guidance. In recent years, NUDT has collaborated with six top Chinese universities, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University and Xi’an Jiaotong University, to host Seven-University Joint Training Camp, featuring over 40 workshops per year and pre-competition simulation contests, which has significantly enhanced participants' competitiveness through cross-institutional exchanges.
