Founded in 1953, National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) is a comprehensive research university listed in the national "Double First-Class" initiative. It has been constantly dedicated to cultivating first-class talents and making first-class achievements for making first-class contributions. It has been playing an essential role in China's economic and social development and national security over a history spanning 71 years. As a hub for talents cultivation and a powerhouse for scientific research and innovation, NUDT focuses on the global trend in science and technology, and is dedicated to developing high-caliber talents and achieving breakthroughs in core technologies for key fields, accelerating towards a world-class university.
As a comprehensive university, it consists of 14 colleges and institutes and covers 8 discipline categories, including sciences, engineering, military science, management, law, literature, economics and education. The development of disciplines at NUDT is characterized by a combination of science and engineering with more emphasis on engineering, and strengthening basic studies for the advancement of engineering. Currently the University offers 61 programs for undergraduates and is authorized to grant master's degrees under 26 first-level disciplines and grant doctoral degrees under 23 first-level disciplines, together with 11 professional master's degrees and 3 professional doctoral degrees.
NUDT has fostered a talent cultivation system with focus on high-quality undergraduate education and high-level postgraduate education and coordinated development of high-standard and highly-efficient professional education, striving to cultivate world-class high-caliber and professional talents. Over a history of 71 years, NUDT has nurtured over 400 thousand talents for the country, over 700 among whom have held posts at provincial or ministerial levels and above.
With focus on major national strategic needs and pressing global challenges, NUDT has been dedicated to carrying out fundamental theoretical explorations and pursuing breakthroughs in core technologies in key fields. Featuring basic research aimed for applications and technological innovation supported by basic research, the University has been working towards original and pioneering innovation to contribute to China's great self-reliance and strength in science and technology and provide innovative NUDT solutions to grand global challenges. In the past 71 years since its establishment, NUDT has achieved a large number of innovations represented by the "TianHe" series supercomputer systems, the "BeiDou" satellite positioning system, ultraprecision machining, maglev trains, etc., creating "China Speed", "China Height" and "China Precision".
