International Seminar on the Strategy of National Security and Development of Science and Technology 2009 was successfully held from May 11th to 13th at NUDT. This marks the first time of such a great event at NUDT. Nine experts from USA, UK, New Zealand, Canada and Greece have participated in the seminar. In addition, two experts from PLA Academy of Military Science, one from PLA National Defense University, one from People’s University of China and five experts from NUDT have delivered theme speeches during the meeting. Major General Zeng Chun, Provost of NUDT, gave a warm welcome speech and declared the opening of the event. 200 faculty members and students from College of Information Systems and Management, College of Humanities and Social Sciences and College of Basic Education for Commanding Officers took part in the activities.
The participating foreign experts are as follows: Drew Thompson, Director of China Studies, the Nixon Center; Mindy Kotler, Director of Asia Policy Point; Joseph Ferguson，consultant for LMI; David Zweig Director of the Center on China's Transnational Relations at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Glyn Harper, Director of Centre for Defence Studies at Massey University;, Vasileios Zervos, associate professor at International Space University of France; and Kerry Brown, Senior Fellow of Chatham House. These foreign experts and their Chinese counterparts conducted warm and heated discussions on the following six topics: strategic research theory and methods under the condition of information technology, national security strategy and national development strategy, non-traditional security and technology policy, development strategy of defense technology and construction of harmonious world, regional security and technology cooperation, the effect of financial crises on the technological policy.
The participants praised that this seminar demonstrated the NUDT’s image of opening-up and self-confidence, promoted the communication in related research areas and laid a firm foundation for the future communication and cooperation, and all the them preached to develop a regular seminar like this with a span of each two years.
The experts from both home and abroad also paid a visit to our programs of the rescue robot , the maglev train, Matter and Materials Experiment Center, and the Library on Campus No. 1 and spoke highly of our scientific research and campus construction achievements.
