National Key Laboratory of New Ceramic Fibers and Composites was approved to be set up in September 1998, and the project passed acceptance inspection and officially began operation in January 2003. The laboratory consists of three research sections: special ceramic fibers, ceramic thermal structure materials, and stealthy materials. The laboratory mainly conducts research on materials design and preceramic polymer pyrolysis technology, ceramic fibers preparation technology, preceramic polymer pyrolysis composite preparation technology, performance measurement and evaluation of materials, and camouflage and stealth technology.
The laboratory has the first-category discipline Ph.D. program of Materials Science and Engineering. It also has the post-doctoral research station of Materials Science and Engineering, the Hunan Province Key Disciplines of Material Science, as well as Material Physics and Chemistry. The laboratory boasts a well-structured team of faculty members with high-level research and strong innovation ability, which includes nine professors, seven Ph.D. supervisors, 22 master supervisors, and two academicians. Our two academicians include CAE-Professor Cai Hongnian and Professor Wen Lishi-as the part-time Ph.D. supervisor, one member of the trans-century disciplinary and academic leaders of National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, two national experts, and three winners of special government allowance. 83% of the faculty members have Ph.D. degrees. The laboratory, quite active in academic exchanges, has established good academic collaborative relationship with Chungnam National University of Korea, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, Tokyo University and National Materials Institute of Japan, Sydney University of Australia, University of Bordeaux and Lyon University of France as well as many renowned universities in China.
The laboratory has advanced research and experiment facilities. The laboratory has the annual-500-kg continuous SiC production line, the ceramic base composite design and molding system, the functional composite material design and processing system, and the advanced materials analysis and testing platform, 5,500-m2 houses for laboratories, and experiment instruments and devices worth of over 38 million Yuan.
During the period of the 10th Five-Year Plan, the laboratory has undertaken over 100 research projects such as National Natural Science Foundation, National 863 Plan (National Advanced Technological and Research Plan) projects, National 973 Plan (National Key Basic Research Development Plan) projects, with annual research fund over ￥500 thousand per capita. The laboratory has yielded a series of high-level research achievements prominently represented by continuous SiC fibers and Si-C-N nano ceramic powder and its composite ceramics, and established preceramic polymer pyrolysis technology with distinctive features. The laboratory has won a second place prize for national science and technology progress, six first and second place prizes for ministerial science and technology progress, ten National Patents of Invention, and published five monographs. The faculty members have published over 800 high-level academic papers, and more than 200 papers have been indexed by SCI and EI.
