National Key Laboratory of Parallel and Distributed Processing, affiliated to the College of Computer Science, was given approval to initiate the project in 1995 and the Laboratory was completed in 1998, consisting of two sub-laboratories (Parallel and Distributed Processing System Architecture, Parallel and Distributed Processing System Software).
The Laboratory currently has 31 researchers, including 12 PhD supervisors，14 professors, seven associate professors, 21 PhD holders, academic leaders such as Academician Lu Xicheng, Academician Zhou Xingmin, Professor Jin Shiyao, Professor Yang Xuejun, Professor Wang Huaimin, Professor Wang Ji.
The laboratory, located in the PDL Building, the College of Computer Science, on Campus No.1, covers an area of 2,850 m2. During the 10th Five-Year Plan and 11th Five-year Plan period, a total of 70,000,000 Yuan was invested in the Laboratory. It possesses such devices as a hardware simulator, a SUN server and the Yinhe high-performance supercomputer, which has taken the lead in China.
The laboratory aims to research and develop parallel and distributed processing technology, and to satisfy the demands of military and defense modernization. The specific research areas are:
(1) Parallel and Distributed Processing System Architecture;
(2) Parallel and Distributed Processing System Software;
(3) Parallel Algorithm and Application;
(4) Parallel and Distributed Processing System Performance Measurement and Evaluation;
The laboratory currently has 43 ongoing projects, with a gross research fund worth over 40,000,000 Yuan. In recent years, the laboratory has nurtured over 250 post-doctoral researchers, PhDs and masters.
During the last three years, the faculty has won five national and ministerial awards of science and technology, published over 400 papers in major journals at home and abroad, published one monograph, and got one patent. The achievements of microprocessor architecture have already been applied to the development of national defense and the national economy.
