The National Key Laboratory of ATR, established in 1992, was the first national key laboratory in our University as well as one of China’s first. It covers an overall area of 4000 m2, with a total fixed asset of 45,810,000 Yuan. With over 10 years of development, the laboratory has amassed a teaching and research team with a diversified ages led by academicians and national experts. It has undertaken nearly 1,000 research projects and made a large number of influential research achievements including eight National Science and Technology Progress Awards. The laboratory besides supplying the armed forces with senior engineers specialized in the field of precision guidance, has also laid a solid foundation for in-depth research of automatic targeting technology.
(1) Research Area
This laboratory is mainly responsible for the research in four areas: millimeter wave automatic target identification technology, infrared automatic target recognition, automation target recognition processing technology, and multiple-sensor fusion and recognition.
(2) Research Achievements
In recent years, the Laboratory has undertaken a great many key projects with high theoretical levels including National 973 Plan (National Key Basic Research Development Plan) Project, pre-research projects, National 863 Plan (National Advanced Technological and Research Plan) Projects of Chinese National Programs for High Technology Research and Development, National Natural Science Foundation, etc with many of the research achievements widely applied. It has won 13 national and provincial/ministerial awards for research achievements, including three second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Awards, five first prizes and six second prizes in the PLA Science and Technology Progress Awards. It made positive contributions to promoting the development of national defense science and technology, realizing the transformation of science-tech to battle effectiveness and productivity, and reaped great military benefits.
(3) Talents Nurturing
The laboratory is responsible for the education at four levels: undergraduates, master candidates, PhD candidates and continuing education. It supervises master and PhD candidates of information and communication engineering, electronic science and technology. These candidates, with use of the laboratory and sufficient research projects that focus on the latest developments in science and research, play important roles in the arena of precision guidance technology. The laboratory has produced the National 100 Best Excellent Doctoral Dissertation, four Hunan Province Excellent Dissertations, four PLA Excellent Master Theses and many winners of science and technology progress awards as PhD or Master Candidates.
(4) Academic Level and Academic Exchange
In recent years, the laboratory has published over 500 academic papers (28 in international journals, 206 in national key journals, 12 at international conferences, 32 at national academic conferences, over 160 in general journals of China, 49 IEEE/SCI/EI indexed), drafted 30 GF reports and compiled the proceedings for the SPIE international conference. It also published three monographs, which have demonstrated recent research developments of the laboratory from diverse perspectives, summarized the research accomplishments of the laboratory, and contributed to making the ATR laboratory an indispensable player in the field of precision guidance automatic target recognition in China.
