The department is actively developing their teaching and research team by emphasizing the importance of strengthening the discipline and by acquiring exceptional teachers. Two faculty members are entitled to special government allowances and one is selected as the member of New Century Excellent Researcher Award Program from Ministry of Education. The department now offers one PhD program in the Philosophy of Science and Technology and three programs for a master’s degree: Philosophy of Science and Technology, Marxist Theories, and Modern and Contemporary Chinese History. Among the graduates from this department, are five who have won the Hunan Province award for Excellent Master’s Thesis. All the programs within the disciplines strive to perfect their areas of study, select the area in which to make breakthroughs, cultivate and launch leaders in their field, and develop teaching and research teams with creative abilities and outstanding performance in teaching and research
Professor Zhu Yazong, Professor Liu Jifeng and Professor Zeng Huafeng from the Philosophy of Science and Technology doctoral program, leaders in their field, have become renowned experts throughout the country; the faculty team has developed into the field’s strongest teaching and research team and comprises the key philosophy and social sciences research base in Hunan Province, in what is a key discipline for Hunan Province. Professor Xue Xuegong, leader in Marxist Theories, has consistently gained recognition and his team is steadily improving in strength and standing. In recent years, the department has undertaken and completed the key “Military Ecological Theory and Military Revolution with Chinese Characteristics” project as well as other projects, and has made an unprecedented breakthrough with the National Natural Science Foundation project “Atomic Bomb, Hydrogen Bomb and Artificial Satellite Project and China Engineering Management Theory and Practice”. To date, the department has completed 46 national and provincial projects, published 37 textbooks and monographs, 161 theses, and won 12 teaching and research awards at PLA level and above.
The department’s goal is to build a first-rate faculty team with top teaching skills, able to carry out research based on discipline construction and revolving around talent cultivation. At present, the department has two teaching teams – one for A Concise Outline of Chinese Modern History and one for The Basic Principles of Marxism. The department also teaches four key development courses for undergraduates: A Concise Outline of Chinese Modern History, The Basic Principles of Marxism (a benchmark course), The Science & Art of Leadership, and An Introduction to Logic. Theory of Marxism (for both master’s and Ph.D. candidates), Military Ethics and The Theory and Practice of Marxist Sinicization (for master’s candidates) are also on the list of key development courses. Our textbook, “History of Natural Sciences and Military Technology”, which the department wrote and published, has been selected as a recommended textbook by the Ministry of Education.
The department is striving to build a National Key Discipline as well as form a discipline with prominent military characteristics, and scientific approach, in order to raise the department’s academic level and overall standing, to build a world-renowned international academic center, and to reach the goal of “leading in China, advancing in the world”.
