Established in 2004, the College of OptoElectronic Science and Engineering consists of the Departments of OptoElectronic Engineering and Optical Information Science and Technology, and the Institute of Directed Energy Technology. The college engages in key technology research for the modernization of national defense, research, engineering technical applications, and the education of our exceptional students in the area of opto-electronics.
The college has developed a multi-disciplinary group based on the first-category National Key Discipline, “Optical Engineering”, and involving physical electronics, acoustics and other disciplines. The college currently offers a post-doctoral research station of Optical Engineering, six second-category disciplinary PhD programs, seven second-category master programs and three undergraduate programs. The college’s faculty currently has 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 30 professors and 10 National 863 Plan experts.
In 2006, Optical Engineering was denoted as fourth among the national key development disciplines in the 11th Five-Year Plan. The major areas of research are: Laser Gyro Technology; High-energy Laser Technology; Fiber-optic Sensor Technology; Nanophotonics; Optical Instruments and Control Technology; as well as Self-adaptive Optics. It is one of Hunan Province’s key development disciplines in the 11th Five-Year Plan. The second-category discipline of Physical Electronics researches areas of high-power microwave and free-electron laser; high current relativistic vacuum electronics; microwave plasma theory and application; high-voltage and pulsed power technology. Acoustics mainly focuses on the research in the fields of high-intensity acoustic technology and underwater acoustic engineering. The college, with excellent research and experimental facilities, has two science and technology innovation platforms of the 985 Project (stage II), a Key Laboratory of Photonic/Phononic Crystals of the MOE, and 12 high-level specialized laboratories.
Since its establishment, the college has won one first and one second prizes for National Science and Technology Progress, one first and one second prizes for National Teaching Achievement Awards, and published more than 2,000 academic papers and more than 20 monographs.
