The laboratory, opened in 1998, is tasked to: explore cutting-edge technology in parallel and distributed processing; develop high-performance computing technology; prepare key technologies for the Yinhe computers; provide technical support for developing computing service environments. It has four main research areas: Parallel and Distributed Processing Architecture; Parallel and Distributed Processing System Software; Parallel Algorithm and Applications; and Performance Evaluation of Parallel and Distributed Processing Systems.
The laboratory has a favourable research and working environment. It has a total construction area of 2,850 m2, a internal Gigabit LAN connected to the university campus network, and a comprehensive experimental environment which includes high-performance parallel computer systems, design and test environment for microprocessors, a test bed for virtual computing environments, a simulation computing platform and a parallel computing system evaluation environment.
The laboratory has developed an outstanding research team led by academicians Lu Xicheng, Zhou Ming and Professor Yang Xuejun. Recently, based on the backbone researchers of the laboratory, this “High-Performance Computing” team was admitted into the "Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Team Development Plan" of the MOE. This team has won the first Science and Technology Innovation Group Award. Its innovative research group for “Key Technology of Petaflops High-Performance Computing" received innovative research group science funding from the National Natural Science Foundation. The laboratory has completed a number of important research projects and is currently working on over 50 new research projects which include: National Natural Science Foundation projects; National 973 Plan projects; and National 863 Plan projects.
Major research projects and a favorable academic atmosphere provide excellent conditions for educating our students. The laboratory actively encourages students with special skills and talents to participate in academic competitions and extracurricular activities. Students have won many awards at the National Mathematical Contest in Modelling, the Challenge Cup Competition, the International Mathematical Contest in Modelling, the ACM Collegiate Programming Contest, the Altera Design Contest and others.
The laboratory creates an open environment for exchanges. Researchers from the laboratory often lecture and participate in academic conferences at universities and institutions at home and abroad. It frequently invites well-known Chinese and foreign scholars to lecture. It has established long-term cooperative relationships with universities and institutes in the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong and other countries and regions.
