Founded in 1999, the Institute consists of four research laboratories: System Architecture, Architecture of Highly Reliable Systems, Computer Engineering, and System Software. It is responsible for the research and development of national and military key research projects and the education of graduates of Computer Science.
The Institute has 46 researchers, three PhD supervisors, 28 Master degree supervisors, and 46 PhD degree holders. Our young and energetic faculty has focused on the development of supercomputers, advocated independent innovation and collaborative research, and served as the national team of High Performance Computer System Research. The Institute features two winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, three winners of the National Qiushi Award, two members of the New Century Excellent Researcher Award Program from the MOE, and seven winners of special government allowances.
The Institute has actively adapted itself to the requirements of national informationization while keeping pace with the world in the development of high-performance computing technology. It has provided high-performance computer systems for developing China’s national economy. The Institute’s long engagement in research and development of computer system structure, high-confidence system structure, engineering and technology, operating systems, compiling systems and application software, has developed a unique integrated pattern of teaching, research and production. It has successfully produced more than 10 types of computers, most notably the Yinhe series supercomputers. The Institute’s Yinhe series high-performance computers have been widely applied in various national economy sectors achieving notable social and economic benefits.
The Institute has received the following awards and prizes:
· One award of National Defense Science and Technology Special Achievement;
· Seven special awards, five first and one second prize for National Science and Technology Progress;
· A second and third prize of the National Invention Awards;
· An award of the National Science Congress;
· First prize of the National Defense Science and Technology Research and Experiment Awards;
· More than 20 first and more than 10 second prizes for Ministerial Scientific and Technological Progress.
Institute policies stress combining research and education while bringing into full play the Joint PhD Supervisor Panel of High Performance Computing. It also integrates nurturing our students’ talents into the entire research and engineering practice process. This has improved students’ innovative and practical abilities, which have resulted in over 50 winners of Ministerial Scientific and Technological Progress awards and/or Hunan Province excellent graduate papers.
