The Department of Network Engineering was formally established in 2008. It has two specialized teaching and research sections (Network Engineering and Information Security) and the Computer Teaching and Experiment Center.  Computer networks are one of the main areas of the first-category discipline of Computer Science and Technology.

The Department currently employs three full and eight associate professors, one PhD supervisor, seven Master degree supervisors, and 14 PhD degree holders. In 2008, the Computer Science and Technology specialized course teaching team was rated as the National Teaching Team.

The Department mainly:

·         Teaches network engineering and information security;

·         Formulates education programs and teaching plans;

·         Implements course teaching activities;

·         Carries out prospective and fundamental researches;

·         Develops college-wide experimental teaching and learning techniques;

·         Provides public courses in computer experiments;

·         Supervises innovative experiments for undergraduates.

The Department has developed three major disciplinary areas:

·         Internet Core Technology;

·         Information Security;

·         Wireless Networking and Mobile Computing Security.

The Department’s achievements since 2005 include:

·         Second prize of the Hunan Province excellent teaching achievement awards;

·         Two first prizes of the NUDT excellent teaching achievement awards;

·         Its Computer Networks course as the 2007 National Benchmark Course;

·         Publication of monographs such as High-Performance Routers, and BPEL4WS and Workflow Technology, textbooks like Computer Networks, 2nd edition (11th Five Year National Planning textbook), and Mobile Computing Technology, with five more textbooks soon to be published;

·         NetDemo, the Department’s computer network-assisted teaching system, widely accepted and used by many colleges and universities in China.

In the previous five years, the Department has undertaken six National Natural Science Foundation Projects, seven National 863 Plan (National Advanced Technological and Research Plan) Projects, one Doctoral Fund project from the MOE, as well as a number of other projects. It has won three national invention patents, two national defense patents, five software copyrights and published over 300 academic papers.

The Department plans and executes high-level academic exchanges. Since 2005, more than 20 foreign experts have lectured at the Department while many teachers of the Department have visited and lectured at:

Swiss Federal Institute of Technology,

University of New South Wales in Australia

Hong Kong Polytechnic University,

Hong Kong City University,

St. Francis Xavier in Canada

Essex University in the United Kingdom.

In cooperation with Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Department has established the Joint Laboratory of Wireless Networks and Mobile Computing, and has sent more than 30 teachers and PhD candidates to Hong Kong to visit, work and carry out collaborative research in the fields of wireless networks, peer-to-peer networks and mobile computing technology. This research has resulted in the publication of a series of high-level papers.  In August 2005, the Department successfully organized the Third International Computer Networks and Mobile Computing Conference (ICCNMC'05) at which a number of world-class computer network experts participated.
