Department of Mathematics and System Science

The Department of Mathematics and System Science originated from the period when NUDT was still the Military Academy of Engineering at Harbin. Professor Lu Qingjun and Professor Sun Benwang, well-known mathematicians, enrolled the first graduates. The department currently has a post-doctoral research station, three Ph.D. programs, seven master programs and an undergraduate program of applied mathematics, subjects shown as follows:

The faculty includes 16 professors, 27 associate professors, 30 teachers with Ph.D. degrees, and 11 Ph.D. supervisors. Aiming at practical solutions to current mathematical problems in major projects, the department conducts research on modeling, theory, algorithm, software and applications using rich “mathematics forward” features.

The department has completed 85 research projects, including four National 973 Plan (National Key Basic Research Development Plan) projects, five National 863 Plan (National Advanced Technological and Research Plan) projects, 23 National Natural Science Foundation projects, two projects of National 100 Best Doctoral Dissertation, and 36 other projects. Those projects were completed with the gross research fund worth nearly 30 million Yuan. The department now has 39 ongoing projects, with the gross research fund worth nearly 16 million Yuan. In the last five years, the faculty has won the second place prize for National Science and Technology Progress, and three second place prizes for natural science of National Science and Technology Award nominated by the Ministry of Education. The faculty members have published over 900 academic papers in well-known mathematics and technology journals at home and abroad, over 400 of which are indexed by SCI and EI. The faculty has published 22 textbooks and monographs, one of which won the China Book Prize.

The laboratories at the department of Mathematics and System Science now include National Key Laboratory of Parallel and Distributed Processing, Mathematics Experiment Center, and Mathematics Technology Laboratory. These laboratories have superior technology such as supercomputers including the Yinhe supercomputers and SGI workstations. There are also many medium-size computers and over 180 PCs.

Main areas of research

1. Algebraic Structure Theory and Application

Algebraic Structure Theory and Application is an important area of research for the master program of fundamental mathematics. The faculty mainly conducts research on matrix analysis and application, theory of rings and modules, homological algebra, and algebra theory of numbers, producing a series of achievements. The faculty has published over 100 papers. Including 39 SCI and EI indexed ones, and they have won two first prizes and one third prize for ministerial science and technology progress. Ph.D. Feng Lianggui, an academic leader of this research field, won the second prize for Natural Science from the Ministry of Education in 2002 (ranking the second) and was selected as the National Excellent University Key Teacher. He then won the second prize for Hunan Province science and technology progress (ranking the fourth), and was selected as one member of New Century Excellent Researcher Award Program from Ministry of Education

2. Differential Equation and Dynamic System

The research in the field of differential equation and dynamic system starts with the improvement of research tools, aims to discover the new phenomena and laws of systems. It focuses on the characteristics of special solutions such as periodic solution, traveling wave solution, attractors, etc. NUDT has made breakthroughs in relevant field of functional analysis, with papers published in international mathematics journals such as JMAA, Proc.Amer.Math.Soc, Fuzzy sets and systems, etc. The faculty has published five new textbooks and 57 papers indexed by SCI and EI. Professor Zhu Jianmin was awarded the title of National Eminent Teacher, and Huang Jianhua and Li Yicheng were selected as the reviewers of Math Review, producing great impact in the community of international functions.

3. Large –scale Scientific and Engineering Computation

Large-scale scientific and engineering computation is based on the development of the Yinhe series supercomputers and a series of theoretical and application projects. Currently it includes five research areas: fast algorithm and its application in signal and image processing, Electromagnetic Topology and Computation, differential equation numerical solution and its application, function approximation theory and its application in numerical calculation, and applied numerical algebra and high confidence parallel algorithm. In the last five years, the faculty members have published over 100 papers, 48 of which have been indexed by SCI and EI, six academic monographs, and won two awards of ministerial science and technology progress. The doctoral dissertation by Professor Cheng Lizhi was selected as the only National 100 Best Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of the discipline of information and communication engineering in 2005. His monograph, Theory and Application of Wavelets, competed in the International Book Fair 2005 as the masterpiece of Science Press and won the China Book Prize.

4. Coding and Cryptology Theory and Application

Error-correction coding and cryptology are two of the most important disciplines of information science, with the former responsible for the reliability and the latter for the security of information in the communication process. This research area focuses on error-correction coding theory, sequential cipher, block cipher, and the design and analysis theory of Hash function. Researches in these areas have yielded numerous achievements. The faculty has published over 100 papers in the influential journals and conferences such as IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, Science in China, Chinese Science Bulletin, The Chinese Journal of Electronics, etc, and more than 40 papers have been indexed by SCI and EI. Professor Li Chao, the academic leader of the area, has won the second prize (ranking No.2) and two third prizes (ranking No.4) for ministerial science and technology progress, and the Henry Fok Excellent Teacher Award.

5. Stochastic Analysis and Modern Statistics

This research area, being the major area of the master program of probability and mathematical statistics, focuses on stochastic analysis and its application in mathematical finance, mathematical theory and methods of high dimensional data. In recent years, the faculty has won two first place prizes and four second place prizes for ministerial science and technology progress. They have also published two academic monographs, Optimum Stopping Theory and Fundamentals of Applied Stochastic Analysis, which received high praise from the mathematician Professor Hou Zhenting. Also, they have won three projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation, having made valuable contributions in the structural analysis of high dimensional data and its application in pattern recognition, and have published more than 60 papers, over half of which have been indexed by SCI.

6. Combinational Mathematics and Optimization

This area focuses on graph theory, mathematical programming, theory and algorithm of system optimization problems such as combinational optimization, global optimization, etc. In the last five years, the faculty has made key breakthroughs in Ramsey number theory, graceful graph theory and algorithm, effective algorithms of complex problems in communication network, transport network, and logistics distribution network. The faculty has published 86 papers including 12 SCI and EI-indexed ones, and six textbooks and monographs, among which Network Algorithm and Complexity Theory, Non-linear Optimization, Combinational Graph Theory and On Counter-Measures have sparked quite a stir in China.

7. Massive Data Information Processing

The Massive Data Information Processing Research area focuses on the mathematical theory and technology related to the compression, transmission, clear treatment and auto target recognition of satellite remote sensing image data, and the brain imaging mechanism. This research area has eight ongoing projects including: National 973 Plan (National Key Basic Research Development Plan) projects, National Natural Science Foundation projects, and National 100 Best Excellent Doctoral Dissertation projects, etc. Recently, the faculty has won three first place prizes and two second place prizes for ministerial science and technology progress, published over 50 SCI-indexed/cited papers. The faculty has also been invited to make two presentations at international conferences.

8. Complex System Theory and Information Processing

This research field focuses on complex system theory and modeling, complex system analysis and simulation, information processing and system recognition, uncertain information processing and application, biological system information processing. Complex System Theory and Information Processing has three ongoing projects, including National 973 Plan (National Key Basic Research Development Plan) branch projects and National Natural Science Foundation projects. Recently, the faculty has published over 100 papers, more than 60 of which have been indexed by SCI and EI. Professor Wu Mengda has been selected as the Hunan Eminent Teacher.

9. Analysis, Evaluation and Optimization of Large Systems

This research area focuses on mathematical theory and method as well as engineering technology of the experiment design, analysis and evaluation of large systems, performance modeling theory of large systems, and system evaluation and optimization. The faculty has recently published over 100 papers, three monographs, and more than 40 papers have been indexed by SCI and EI.

10. Information System Analysis and Integration

This field of research focuses on the system analysis and integration of network information, and the system analysis and integration of the evolution theory of complex information system. At present, the area is subordinate to College of Computers.

Nurturing Talent

1. Faculty

As mentioned above, the department currently has 16 professors and 27 associate professors, with 59.7% teachers having senior titles. There are 39 Ph.D. degree holders, and 32 master‘s degree holders, with 93.1% teachers holding the Ph.D. or a masters degree. 79% are young and middle-aged teachers who are below 45 years old, 63% teachers have had experiences at other universities. There are 11 Ph.D. supervisors and 17 master’s supervisors.

Among the faculty members are two winners of National 100 Best Excellent Doctoral Dissertation (Wang Zhengming, Cheng Lizhi), one nominee of National 100 Best Excellent Doctoral Dissertation (Liu Puyin), one National Eminent Teacher (Zhu Jianmin), one Hunan Eminent Teacher (Wu Mengda), one member of High Performance Calculation National Innovation Team (Cheng Lizhi), one member of National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project (Wang Zhengming), one National Excellent University Key Teacher (Feng Lianggui), four in-post members with special government allowances (Wang Zhengming, Wu Yu, Jin Zhiming, Zhu Jianmin), one third prize winner of Henry Fok Young Teacher Award (Li Chao), two members of Hunan 121 Talent Project (Feng Lianggui, Zhu Jubo), and two Hunan disciplinary leaders (Feng Lianggui, Cheng Lizhi).

The faculty members are responsible for teaching the undergraduates of applied mathematics, supervising the top students and graduation of undergraduates, and nurturing master and Ph.D. candidates of the department. They are also responsible for teaching the public courses of mathematics for other departments in the university.  In addition, they supervise the mathematical modeling activities and contests and have made great contributions to the development of high-level engineers and commanding officers.

2. Basic teaching conditions

The department is based on two first-category disciplines, mathematics and system science. At present, the department has all of the seven second-category discipline master programs under mathematics and system science. It also holds the Ph.D. programs of applied mathematics, computing mathematics, and system analysis and integration. In which applied mathematics and computing mathematics are Hunan Province Key Disciplines, with a post-doctoral research station of applied mathematics. The discipline of applied mathematics of NUDT ranked No.17 in 2006 in China.

Conditions Development of Applied Mathematics is the key project of the 11th Five-Year Plan of the university. The Applied Mathematics Laboratory, with an area of 800 M2, has nearly 100 advanced computers and related devices. This equipment is qualified to provide service for the course curriculum, specialized practice and mathematical modeling training of applied mathematics majors and all the students of the university. In addition, the department has a research laboratory in the office building, with an area of nearly 1,000 m2 and over 200 high-performance computers, providing an ideal site for some undergraduates to participate in research projects.

The Applied Mathematics Reference Room covers an area of over 100 m2. Serving as an addition to the library of the university, it has purchased tens of thousands of books in related fields at home and abroad, and subscribes to several well-known mathematical journals and special reports.

The website of mathematical modeling of the department, www.shumo.com, is one of the most influential websites of mathematical modeling in China. The website ranks top among similar websites in terms of the number of registered users, average visits per day, or rankings from search engines.

3. The department strictly draws up the development plan of their students and tries to construct the curricula t  to o adapt to their needs.

To develop the talents of our gifted students, the faculty has incorporated new educational thought and teaching methods, reformed the curriculum and encouraged the use of innovative activities. They have also made a large number of achievements including the second prize for National Teaching Achievements.

The nurturing mode adopted is for undergraduates to lay a solid foundation in the first three years and specialize in their major in the fourth year. With this solid background of mathematics and physics, the students will be able to integrate the subjects whenever needed. This teaching method of integrating mathematics and physics has been practiced for eight terms and proven successful. The undergraduate program of applied mathematics has altered the way courses are taught from that of information and computing to providing students with more opportunities of applying their skills to practical applications. The department has added and revised courses that emphasize the practical applications of scientific calculation, statistical experiments, social surveys, etc. These changes have demonstrated the advantages of combining science and engineering together in our course curriculums. This will help students acquire the fundamental theory and approach in their major field in a systematic manner and gain the practical ability of applying what they have learned into practice. Research achievements in the areas such as mathematical theory and approach of image data processing, algorithm theory in computer science, coding and cryptology theory and application, etc have been adopted to the curriculum and teaching content of undergraduate programs.

4. The department has encouraged the reforming of course teaching content and revising of textbooks as needed.

The department has actively carried out research in education and teaching. This has led to reforms in teaching content and reaped many favorable results. The teaching reform experiment conducted on the course Mathematical Analysis successfully bridged the course and other specialized courses. Thus the department has adopted the concept of modern mathematics into the framework of calculus, and strengthened the training of mathematical thinking. The department has carefully selected the teaching content, adjusted the teaching methods, and has integrated mathematics and physics. This is to complete the course teaching for the students of various levels and categories. The teaching research and practice of mathematical public course has yielded national and provincial results. Mathematical Modeling and Mathematical Experiment was evaluated as the National Benchmark Course. Advanced Mathematics was evaluated as the Hunan Benchmark Course. Three courses (Basic Algebra, Fundamentals of Applied Mathematics, and Advanced Engineering Mathematics) were listed as the development projects of Hunan Graduate Benchmark Course. Five courses (Advanced Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Computing Method and Complex Function) were listed as the development project of NUDT Key Courses. Students from NUDT have won straight top prizes in mathematical modeling contest, and have gotten higher scores in the postgraduate entrance examination and college mathematics contest than that of their counterparts of other universities in Hunan Province. The faculty have borrowed from the latest research achievements and, under the guidance of modern educational thought, adopted new teaching methods and curriculum into the teaching process and made many important achievements. In the past five years, the department has won the second prize for National Teaching Achievement, the third prize for Hunan Province Teaching Achievement, and four first prizes for teaching achievements of the university. The faculty has been actively engaged in the research into design and practice of innovation courses, completed 21 teaching research projects, and published 35 teaching/research papers, several of which won the award of Excellent Teaching Paper.

According to the requirements needed by our talented students, the department has emphasized the integration of subject matter. They have combined classical contents and modern mathematics together, strengthened the training of mathematical thinking, and developed the textbook system and textbooks with these unique features. The department has published 16 textbooks from Higher Education Press, Science Press, Electronic Industry Press, Tsinghua University Press, NUDT Press, etc. Among them Analysis and Application of Wavelets (Professor Cheng Lizhi et al. Science Press) has been greeted by very high remarks in China. Fundamentals of Applied Mathematics (Professor Wu Yu et al, Higher Education Press), a textbook for postgraduates, was selected as the textbook of the 11th Five-Year Plan in China.

5. The department has emphasized practical applications of their subject matter and hands-on activities and contests.

With a variety of experimental projects, disciplinary contests, and research training, we are able to engage the students in innovative activities to develop their creative abilities and the practical application of their knowledge. Our open laboratories have become an ideal place for students to reinforce what they have learned, enhance their abilities, and improve their core competitiveness.

The Mathematical Modeling Contest is a prominent feature of the department. In the past decade, the faculty has guided students to achieve excellent results, in local, national and international contests. As a result, we now are ranked No. 1 among China’s universities in terms of the level and quantity of prizes.

The College Mathematical Contest is another example of our success. NUDT has been ranking No.1 among Hunan Province universities ever since the College Mathematical Contest resumed in 2006. For example, in 2008, all of the 20 participants from NUDT won prizes, and NUDT also swept the top four places of the contest.

Main development goals

The department strives to be awarded the first-category discipline Ph.D. program of mathematics or system science, and develop Applied Mathematics into a National Key Discipline. The department will sign collaboration agreements with the counterparts of two or three world famous universities, and develop the department into an exemplary model of international exchange and communication. The department will nurture their team of effective faculty members, with the majority holding Ph.D. degrees, who combine teaching and research, grasp international academic developments, develop top academic leaders and teams, increase the number of research areas, and construct a top teaching and research department that serves both the teachers and students of NUDT.
