The Space Technology Institute features research on the fundamental and engineering of satellite and near space aircraft. It is mainly engaged in teaching, research, and engineering project research in the fields of satellite overall technology, satellite control technology, measurement and control technology, and near space aircraft technology. The institute, with its four research sections listed below, has advanced teaching and research experiment equipment that have allowed the completion of many key research projects.
The main research areas of the institute are as follows:
l Satellite Overall Technology
This research area aims to enhance the overall performance of aircraft through overall design and optimization of various spacecraft and aircraft. This area focuses on the research of aircraft overall design technology, micro-satellite technology, spacecraft in-orbit service technology, satellite application technology, and space mission management and support technology. This research area also has great application potentials for the optimization of aerospace engineering implementation process and the promotion of space new concept and new technology application.
l Satellite Control Technology
This research area aims to enhance the control performance of space systems and spacecraft platforms. It focuses on design, control and simulation technology of space systems, platforms and their components, along with research and applications on micro-satellite systems. It also performs research for aircraft system dynamics and control, new maglev flywheel technology and application, large flexible structure dynamics and vibration control. The Satellite Control Technology research area also has great application potentials for the support of future space system and platform development, improvement of space system control accuracy and application level, and the design and control of other similar systems, e.g. the development of heavy-load low-friction bearings.
l Near Space Aircraft Technology
This research field features overall design and engineering research of new concept near space aircraft and micro unmanned aircraft. It focuses on overall design of new concept aircraft, multi-disciplinary design optimization, new layout and aerodynamic characteristics, navigation and control, system integration and application. Also, there is research on near space solar-powered aircraft, micro ducted fan aircraft, long flight hours unmanned aircraft, and near space high-speed aircraft. There is also the application in high-resolution earth observation, meteorology and disaster monitoring, large-scale regional enduring communication applications, and emergency information application for urban communities.

It vigorously encourages disciplinary development and technology research in the fields of aircraft general technology, satellite control technology, measurement and control technology, and near space aircraft technology.
